Participatory Forest Management: Improving policy and institutional capacity for development (2006-2010)
This regional project is funded by the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) under its National Forest Programme Facility (NFPF). It was designed and is being implemented by CANARI in conjunction with the Forestry Departments of the seven project countries: Barbados, Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, St. Christopher (Kitts) and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Forestry Department in Jamaica is implementing its own project activities under NFPF funding but participates in and contributes to regional activities.
Project goal
To research and promote ways in which forest management can optimise the socioeconomic and environmental benefits from forests and to build capacity for participatory planning and management of forest resources at the regional, national and local level.
The following are the main components of the project:
- An assessment of the policy and institutional context and capacity needs for participatory forest management in each of the project countries
- Capacity needs assessments in each of the project countries
- Regional capacity building strategy
- Regional seminar on forest policy, Grenada, February 2007
- Regional workshop Participatory Forest Management: Key tools and methods
- Training of Trainers in Participatory Forest Management workshop
- National workshops
- Action learning projects
- Small grants programme
